Just after the diagnosis of my disease, my family and I discussed at length regarding the treatment place and hospital. We got the advice of a patient who was receiving treatment at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Parel (Mumbai, India) and we were convinced that we should get treatment there.


  Experience With Doctors Top


Every time I meet with the doctor/s and observe their subject matter expertise, effective communication skills, professionalism, and most importantly, their compassion toward the patients, my confidence in them gets reinforced. They empathize with the patients and make every possible effort to minimize or eliminate their pain. This is a unique part of the culture at the Tata Memorial Hospital.

However, to improve the productivity of the doctors in the outpatient department, I would suggest that the medical records be documented at two instead of three places (patients' hospital file, personal file, and online system). This could be done using the latest dual paper so that the doctors would write on one paper and the contents would be automatically copied onto the sheet beneath (similar to the bank counter slips). These papers are carbonless copy papers and also very light (low grams per square meter) with high strength. In my opinion, this could save the doctor 2 to 4 min per patient and also reduce fatigue.

In addition, I would also like to suggest that the doctors strongly recommend to the patients that they should not visit quacks or seek fake and non-researched therapies, especially at the beginning of their treatment. This is a time when a lot of relatives/friends/acquaintances suggest non-standard treatments without any sound validation which may have negative side effects.

I would also like to share my experience with the dietician during the initial period. In my opinion, the treating medical oncologist must carefully review the diet plan recommended by the dietician. My weight reduced by 10 kg after following the diet recommendations, but a few months later my medical oncologist suggested a different plan which helped me to gain some weight and gave me more strength.

My experience with undergoing a biopsy and interventional radiology was good, and the doctor's fine motor skills were beyond excellent.

With regard to the cost of chemotherapeutic drugs, they can be availed under various schemes, which make these medicines relatively cheap. These are available with the medical representatives. My suggestion is that the doctors could recommend these schemes to the patients so that they can directly benefit from the low prices. This suggestion is based on my experience with one of the chemotherapeutic drugs.


  Experience With The Nursing and Paramedical Staff Top


Again, as part of the culture, most of the nursing and paramedical staff are very supportive, compassionate, and helpful. They understand the treatment requirements and perform all procedures trying to minimize the discomfort caused to the patients. They also guide the new patients at each step with proper details of the various processes and help them navigate through the hospital.


  Experience With Patient Interaction Processes and Systems Top


Although most of the processes and systems seem efficient at handling huge variations in the load, there is still scope for improvement. I have experienced this continuous improvement in the computed tomography scan process, which has become tremendously better at managing the high patient load in a very limited area.

I believe that the efficiency of the system and the productivity of the staff can still be improved to save the time and efforts of the doctors, staff, as well as patients.

One specific area where I think an immediate improvement is required is the turnaround time for the next-generation sequencing (NGS) test. I did an NGS test two times. The first time the test could not be completed (as per the medical oncologist) and the second time, the report took more than 2 months to become available after multiple follow-ups. However, statistically speaking, two samples are not sufficient to measure the efficiency of the process.
